Transmission Questions

Just got an '01 Ford F350 automatic..It has a kind of shake/shudder in first gear right off the line, but besides that it never does it any other time. I've heard of other people having the same problem, but never heard whether it was a big issue or not. The other question is my second and third gear are really firm shifting. My buddy told me that's just how they are, but I don't know. Is that a normal thing for these transmissions?
