May have to settle for an auto...

I have been looking for a manual transmission 7.3 but have had some serious difficulty finding a decent truck (at least within 300 miles). I may end up going with an auto because fo how many there are available, the amount of trucks in nice shape in the area and my wife will sometimes drive the truck too (although I wish she wouldn't haha). Whatever truck I get will probably have about 150,000 on it give or take. I was just curious of what I should with the auto transmission look for on a test drive. Is there any tell tale signs of a transmission that is about to go other than obvious slipping? And if I find one that seems to be holding up alright what should I do to ensure it will continue to do so? I would plan on putting a larger trans cooler and a few other things if neccesary. I don't plan on over working this truck, the most it will probably pull is an 18ft boat in the summers or a snowmobile trailer in the winter, nothing too strenuous by any means. As far as mods to the truck, I just plan on doing a basic intake, exhaust and programmer. Any advice on what to look for or what to do after I purchase one would be appreciated. I'm pretty new to the world of automatics and a little uneasy about it for sure. Thanks
