Acquired this truck relatively cheap but with one issue. It's a late '99 F-250 2wd with 150k miles and a solid running engine but the transmission will not shift into any forward gears. It positively shift into reverse without any problem. Fluid appears clean/unburnt and I am going to try to get a code reader tomorrow to see what it's throwing. Has anyone had a similar problem and what was the diagnosis? Thanks in advance!
this happens in my 01 7.3 but only after reversing with a trailer attached. i baby the throttle and get in going in 1st then 2nd and into D. when i get it going it shifts fine for weeks/months on end until i hook up a trailer and back up. any ideas on what your issue was?
Mine doing the same thing. Once going it is good until I shut her down. Upon restarting, I have the same problem. Reverse works fine, forward can be babied by starting out in low after it catches, then to 2nd, then to drive. Drives fine after that. Did you figure out your problem?
I was going to repost after this weekend's camping trip when I was positive that my problem has been resolved......had to do a lot of searching to find a tranny mechanic that would take the time to listen to me about what the truck was doing and take the time to try to figure it out. I found jimmy Shannon at Upstate Pro Trans in Greenville SC (if you're near the area, I can't recommend him enough) he spent over an hour talking to me and driving the truck and showing me exactly how my tranny works and what could be causing it. he told me that the line mod valves from the factory were limp wristed on the 4r100's. he replaced my forward line mod valve with a bigger diameter to allow for better fluid pressure to engage forward gears. he also replaced my low reverse valve, cleaned valve body surface with a stone and retorqued the valve body. after all this the truck has a nice positive shift through all gears and I hooked up my camper and drove 30 miles and backed up and down a hill with it attached and could not replicate the problem. I have had no tranny issues since he did this work. BTW he charged me $250 for parts and labor which I thought was very reasonable, so you have an idea of what the pricing ballpark is.
dont be surprised though if your trans fails in the near future. Clutches are probably still on the way out and by upping the line pressure is just a temporary fix.
For those in this thread having the same issues, the forward drum splines may be stripped out, forward clutch pack may be toast too.
I just installed rebuilt transmission from a rebuilder... drove it 15km to work and when I pulled into the parking lot it acted like it was low on fluid. checked the levels and they seemed ok, had thoughts that the transmission dipstick could be the wrong one due to this motor came from a 01 cube van so I added 2 more liters of Mercon VI and it grabbed really good and did not slip anymore. so I took it for a test run of around the block and the forward gears crapped right out on me but reverse is still strong as ever.. if anyone can provide some knowledge as to this issue please text 905-868-2972 please no outside Canada text or calls if your inside feel free to text or call.. thanks in advance Chris or even meeker 7 8 5 0 1 @ g mail .com no spaces
