tranny locked up?
Hello I'm new to this forum.....I just changed the transmission clutch on my 2000 f-350 manual transmission 7.3 diesel... I was driving at about 45 mph when all of a sudden I hear and feel a loud bang, then i just start skidding all over the place....finally i stoped and tried to shift into gear, when I release the clutch the truck turns off like if stuck in gear...i've asked around and all transmission mechanics tell me that its the first time they hear of that happening that when transmissions go out they usually just pop the gear out of place but never lock the wheels like that...any ideas? when in nuetral i can shift into gear but i can't release the clutch....I would appreciate any input...

I had the exact same problem yesterday, You can make it move by building up some boost and basically dumping the clutch like you would if you were pulling a sled.
Input would be great as I am planning on pulling the tranny tonight. |

If you release the clutch with the transmission in neutral does the engine stay running? What happens if you put the transfer case in neutral?

I am not sure if he is having the same problem I am but If I put my tranny and transfer case in nuetral I still could not get my tranny out of gear. The only way i could get it to release was to launch it. Now it makes all kind of racket when i am rolling and the clutch is released.

bigjeepman-I'm afraid you may have cost yourself some extra cash with the hard launch trick. It's possible that you freed up whatever was stuck but it's more likely that you broke additional parts. It sure sounds like you've got an internal transmission problem now but I can't really tell long distance if the initial problem was transmission, transfer case or differential. You'll have to see how those parts feel when you turn them by hand with the truck up in the air.
bocatt250-While it could be anything from the clutch (although that would be weird) to the differential my initial thought is that the differential packed up. If you put the transfer case in neutral and the truck still doesn't roll but you can engage the clutch in any gear without killing the engine then the problem is almost certainly the differential. |
