strange trans problem

I have a 02 Ford Excursion 7.3 Diesel 4X4 with 156,000 miles on it I've owned it since new. When I drive it for at least 40 minutes the OD light starts flashing it won't go into overdrive and it won't go into reverse but when I come to a stop and let it sit for awhile its fine everything works??? If I just drive short distances its fine. Any suggestions

Do you have any mods on it? The OD light means there is a code now stored in there and you have 1 week to get it out. Sounds like the trans is slipping, and but check the codes. Maybe its the pump or.. It cold be anything really.. The important thing is check the codes, find someone with a scanner and hook it up because it could be something simple or something very expensive and until you find out you wont know for sure.

mine did the same thing yesterday. getting a scan on it tomorrow. why only one week to get it fixed tho?

Codes will stay in memory for about one month, not one week.

Sounds like symptoms of loose center support bolts. Pretty common problem and some what simple fix. My truck had the same problem.

this could be a lot more. sometimes a trans going bad will do this. it wont go in reverse because the gear or clutch is burned out. also the fluid is nice and thick when its cold and helps it...but when its warmed up it will get thin causing the problems again
