Man this is driving me nuts

I'll be driving along and all the sudden my dash lights will flicker and I'll here a clicking under the dash like a relay or something and the truck will upshift and then immediately downshift or down then right back up. Its getting very annoying. Anybody ever heard of such a thing?

Sounds like your losing power or a ground or something. Have you checked your battery connections?

Thats what I thought also. We had some really crappy weather in TX last month that zapped my batteries. I installed some brand new Intersate batteries and the connections are solid and its still doing it. Also what makes me think its not a bad ground is because it will do it(dash lights flickering) while the truck is sitting, with the key on but not running. Then after the truck is started and moving it somehow affects the trans and makes it start shifting all funky.

I dont know but it scares the crap outta me when I'm towing cause i'll be cruising at 70-75 in od and all the sudden i'll see the dash lights flash and bam it will downshift and the rpms will sky rocket and sometimes it wont shift back into od. Maybe my trans is on the way out I dont know. Its just odd to me that the dash lights flashing somehow coincides with the trans shifting funny.

when my tranny started giving me trouble for the first time i took it to ford and the guy first checked the steering column for a short near the shifter assembly. he said it was very common for these trucks to short out here and cause trans probs. in my case it wasnt but it sounds like yours may be a short.
