Best tranny mods for towing??
I just bought a 99 powerstroke with 145k on it. The auto tranny is stock and shifts great, converter locks up great too. This truck was never used to tow and I bought it to tow. I pull a gooseneck with two rockcrawlers (~15K) on it through the mountains so I need to make sure I dont toast the tranny. Anyone have any advice on how to make this tranny last?? I have ordered a tru cool tranny cooler and an autometer temp gauge. What other mods do you guys recommend to help with the tranny? Converter? Valvebody? Are these mods worth it in a stock tranny?? Or should I just leave the tranny, take as best care of it and save my money for a rebuilt one? Sorry for all the questions, but I need some advice.

Well, you are on the right track with the cooler and gauge. A good valve body (John Wood, Factory Tech, BTS) would be a big help. And if you have the means, drop a good Triple disc convertor in there.

take as good of care as you can... save for a built one... no point in takin halfsteps when a full step will be required

Very true, A friend of mine said the same thing. Here is my thought on it. If I buy a new valve body and it helps my tranny last another 20K then I would say it was well worth the $225. Plus when I do get a rebuilt unit, I can have that valve body put in the new one. And if I do a new converter I can have it flushed and put in the new rebuilt tranny. Right?? My point is, if I did spend this money it wouldnt be a total waste because I could have all this stuff put in the rebuilt unit. plus It is going to take me about a year and a half to save up $3500 for a rebuilt tranny.

i wouldnt put a used valve body or TC in a new trans... even it it was lightly used... i dont know if brian, if you go with BTS, will warrenty a trans that had used parts in it... are you going to be modding the truck...

No one will warranty a rebuilt trans with a used tc in it. Even if it has only 300 miles on it. Because of the clutch in the tc, it is not adviseable to attempt to flush it.
