So I took my maiden camping voyage with my new(to me ) PSD and toy hauler. First thing I did to my truck was new radiator and 6.0 trans cooler.
This weekend I went up north and most went well until pulling the long up hill grade to my camping area. Flats and rolling hills trans temp stayed 175-180* nothing to worry about , I was happy !
About half way up the long grade, temp began to climb slowly but steadily until it reached 230*. That's when I pulled over to let it cool off. At this point I was down to 2nd gear rolling about 30-35mph.
Should I move my trans cooler to the front for more cooling ?
Fully loaded my GCWR is about 19.5k.
I'm kinda disappointed in this performance. :frown2:
I cant monitor my engine coolant temp, but my oil temp was running high also , about 230-240*
which means my coolant should've been about 180-200 range, right ?
Possibly the bypass is stuck open. Remove the rear cooler return line from the trans and start it. See how much comes out. It should fill a 2 liter in about 15-20 seconds
not real familiar with the 7.3
but it seems like your ECT would have been closer to your EOT ?
glad your cooler is new. used ones scare me. I know for a fact they are impossible to flush 100% if they have been in a truck that has the tranny chit the bed
i thought the normal 6.0 cooler retrofit was to place the cooler in the same place as the 6.0? is that where yours is ? just behind the AC condenser
Yes, installed in same place as old cooler, but I found a thread that talked about someone putting in very front right behind the grill, to get cooler air
what was your RPMS? Also noticed *new stock radiator* was it from ford or an online special? Also was the 19.5k weight based on dry weight of truck n trailer or including gear and people? because at 15.5-16k I was only seeing about 170 going up some 8% grades for 3+ miles.
Also what the miles on the transmission? aka every change the 8 or so quarts of fluid and a new filter?
A coolant filter wont help with engine or transmission temps, its a filter to help remove debris in the coolant system. I would change the bypass fitting on the transmission and check your fluid to start.
- rpms. 27-2800
-19.5lbs fully loaded
-not sure about the transmission miles, probably original to truck which has 195k, but the torque converter was changed last year before I purchased
- trans fluid was changed right before I purchased but not filter
- fluid looks clean and brand-new still
Ok sounds like good RPM range. most don't know the 7.3l doesn't really get into power until above 22-2300 rpms anyways. I would check the bypass. Also at 195k I would definitely change the filter. When you changed the fluid did you drop the pan and inspect the magnet or?
Too be honest if the bypass replacement doesn't fix it, it just sounds like the transmission is getting warn out. 195,000 miles is a lot on all the components. Not saying there isn't a possibility of other issues though.
thanks for your input. I would assume that when the torque converter was changed they had put a new filter in, but I will be changing fluid and filter very soon. I have read about a flow test for the trans cooler. I will try that also.
