Edge evolution, hard 3rd gear shift
I have a 2000 powerstroke, 4wd with 200,000 miles on it. The transmission functions perfectly fine with the stock program, but I start having some problem when I run any of the power programs using and edge evolution programmer. When accelerating at about 2/3 throttle it will shift 1-2 fine, then into 3rd fine but then it feels like it goes into a slight freewheel or defuel and then it bangs hard back into gear. The following overdrive shift feels fine.(The torque converter and 4th gear shift feel like they happen at the same time with this controller). It does not do it at light throttle or full throttle, and it seems to do it worse if you start at full throttle but start backing out of the throttle prior to the third gear shift. I thought I had it fixed by softening the shift firmness in the controller but it did it again the other day.
I am mostly wanting to figure out what is cuasing the freewheeling sensation just after the third gear shift. I don't want to kill the tranny, but I also don't like running it with the stock program. In addition to power the programmer has improved my fuel mileage. |

Can anyone be more specific as to what the edge evolution does to hurt the tranny? I reloaded the program last night and I set the shift firmness to the minimum and it did not repeat the problem. Does this mean that I have lowered the line pressure? Will a lower line pressure make it easier for the clutch packs to slip? Is the line pressure at a shift independent of the line pressure while in a gear or does the line pressure change accross the board? Is the line pressure dependant on the throttle position?

I am having similiar issues on my 2000 F-250 with 182k miles. The difference is in my stock program I was having the same hard shifts you are in 2-3. However, I noticed with the edge evolution that I just installed the problem goes away with the level 1 tow program. When I am in level 2 or 3 the 2-3 hard banging shifts come back. I talked with edge yesterday and they recommended bumping up the shift firmness. I tried setting this to 10 for 2-3 shifts on level 2 last night and it seems to shift must better now. On a side note I know the programmer is just masking the shift problem and eventually I am going to have some real tranny issues. It would be great if someone could shed some light on what is actually occuring on the 2-3 shifts as described in the original post. |
