Question Checking manual fluid level???

My son suggested I check the fluid level in my tranny and I am at a loss... I know in auto's there is a dipstick but... I have no idea what to do with my manual. The reason he said I need to check the level is that my tranny has started to make a growling noise, I asked if it was the throwout bearing and he said to start with the cheapest fix first and make sure there was enough lubricant. So, if I find the level is low what kind of lube do I use and how do I get it in there? Like I stated above - I'm used to automatics so I need a little guidance with the manual.

I've been told that these 6-speeds tend to make noise anyways... mine growls at idle in gear. It annoying, but it goes away when I accelerate. But checking the fluid is good practice to get into a few times a year. Fill with Mercon ATF.

Just bought a 2001 350 Crew Cab Dually with 140K miles...I noticed this same grinding noise in 1,2 gear while coasting thru a parking lot....drove it a good bit more and listened at different speeds...only happens with little to no load...Gear lash is correct. I took it to a mechanic before purchase and he confirmed that these things just make noise and theres nothing you can do to fix it.

It is annoying but i just try to keep the rpms up so it doesnt sound like a beat up old truck....
