As suggested earlier, the trans is probably eventually going out.

I had a 88 ford turbocoupe with a automatic, bought it with a bad transmission.
The guy said it puked oil out of the top of the trans one day and towed it home because it had no gears.

Guess what the issue was?

Particles of the clutches coming apart and clogging the trans cooler, no kidding did i pull off the lines, check the cooler, cleaned them out and sold the car 1 week later with no issues at all.

So, pull the lines, check for debris at the small ends, fittings ect, make sure you have fluid going back toward the trans.

If the trans makes pressure, i do believe it will create heat that quick if there is no return.

Check your lines bud.

bmodel, you allmost got it right. That line does not have a temp sensor in it but it does have a pressure bypass valve in it. If the cooler clogs, then pressure builds up and pushes the ball off it's seat, fluid bypasses the cooler and goes on to the lubrication circuit. Better to have hot fluid on those planets than no fluid.

alberta, if you replace the solenoid body, the temp sensor was in it.

I am having the same problem with my 03 X, but my Edge Insight says my tranny temp is over 8,000! Goes into tow mode and frustrates the hell out of me.

Over 8000? That is slightly drastic. Get some real gauges.
