Another "what is this noise" question...
I have a 2WD 2000 crew cab dually with the six speed manual transmission.
When in first gear started off while making a turn the transmission is very loud. It will not make the noise when starting off in a straight line. It is not a grinding noise but you can hear the gears. It will also do it in second gear if I "short shift" it while still in the turn... As soon as I get the truck going straight or go to higher RPM the noise goes away Also, when cruising I will get a clunk when I turn off the cruise control... The clunk sounds as if it is coming from the end of the transmission leading me to believe it is a worn u-joint. A buddy of mine that has limited experience with PSD's suggested that the transmission noise may be caused by worn out or broken transmission mount. Have any of you all experienced such noises? If so, what was the cure? I just want to get some ideas together before I tear into this thing. Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

If it is only doing it in the said situations then it sounds to me like it probably gets louder the more the trans is loaded down (the more you are lugging the engine)? The clunk probably is a u-joint. Look under the truck as you have someone else put it in gear with the rear tires of the ground to verify.

Ryan, Thanks for the reply!!! It only does it if I am turning the truck while starting from a stop... If I am starting from a stop going straight it does not make the noise. You are correct about it being louder the more it is lugged down. If I slip the clutch a little keeping the RPMs up it is not nearly as loud. Any ideas what could be causing this noise? Thanks again!!!

Your bearings in the trans may need gone through. How are you synchros?

Ryan, Synchros seem fine... The trans shifts great and is not difficult to get into/out of any gears.

might be gear rattle on the first 2 gears. but the clunk might be something to check out.
