Truck Dies Going Into Gear

Hello, the problem I have with my truck is that it sometime dies when you put it into gear. It does not matter if you go into reverse or drive. I noticed that it does it the most when it is cold and not been driven in while. Once in awhile it will do this when it is warm too. Another thing that I notice that I do not think is right is that when you do put it into gear you can always hear it idle way down before it goes into gear and that is when it dies. Also sometimes you can press the peddle a little bit to save the truck from dieing but it does not always work. If anybody could give me some advice that would be great. Thanks David

sounds like your torque converter is going on full lock when it does catch a gear. My vote is the Torque Converter/trans is on its way out.

Mine has done this several times, no matter if hot or cold. I had to start the truck about ten times to get it crawled into the shop about 3 feet at a time, thats the reason i have the tranny suitcase sittin in the bed waiting for the weekend when my new BTS is installed.

I'd pull the pan and see how much you have for metal shavings, cut your filter up after your have taken it out, see if its clogged or saturated with shavings if no shavings you could have maybe caught a bad Converter before it totally trashed the rest of the trans. Get it looked at asap at a good repudable shop, one that you trust cuz trans are easy ways to get a crappy product for just a little less than a very good product with people that stand behind it. You get what you pay for.

Best advice for a shop is find a shop who knows what your talking about when you mention John Woods, Suncoast, BTS and at a last resort ATS. If they have no knowledge of these companies odds are they build/sell an inferior product, i do know this i spent just shy of 10K on factory "heavy duty 4R100's" and I could only get 30-40K out of them. So hope i didnt ramble on too much, but transmissions are one part of my powerstroke i have became way too familiar with.

I was thinking torque convert too, have you gotten any codes pop up yet as in SES light?

No i do not get any codes with the SES light. The thing i do not understand about the problem is that it will die once but as soon as you start it back up and put it in gear it does not die then. So I should pull the pan and filter and look for metal shavings?

yes, my trans went out without setting the O/D light into hypermode. I never checked for codes, i knew the trans went out so i didnt bother looking for codes. Just called down to BTS and sent me a new one and had it in 5 days.

so, again pull the pan and inspect the filter/pan

Ok so if I got metal in my oil pan, what does that mean and what should I do about it? And what if there is not any metal in my oil pan?

That's hard to say, it's a bad sign. If you have money and plan to mod get a BTS or JW transmission and be done with it to enjoy your truck to it's fullest. If your low on funds you can try flushing the transmission fluid and swap the filter see if that was your issue. It's real difficult with these autos, they are usually bad or in need of some service with the big motor in front of them though.

Regardless if there is shavings, take it to a good tranny shop, or a diesel performance shop. These auto's cannot take dirty or contaminated fluid for any length of time.
