Head Gaskets

How common is it for the head gaskets on our trucks to go out? Im going through a resivoir or coolant/water a month right now. No visible leaks, oil isn't milky but I can smell a very faint smell of burnt coolant odor. Also no visible signs of burnt coolant under the hood anywhere. Give me some ideas as too where I should look. Could it be my head gaskets are bad? Help me out here please.

Todd
