Question In need of some info

I tried a search but didn't get anything from my keywords.
A while back I read something about black "sludge" like build-up in the fuel filter housing. Anyone remember that thread or have any info?

We had to jump start the truck last night and this morning. Just put new batteries in it last week and my wife called me on her way to work to tell me she was getting an ABS light and the guages were erratic. That told me there was a problem with the alternator but I asked her to limp it on to her work.......It didn't make it. Long story short- I had it towed to the nearest auto parts store and changed the alt. in their parking lot. While I was changing it they charged one of the batteries for me. I had a filter in the truck already so I changed it while the batt. was finishing up. That's when I saw the black goo in the FF housing and remembered the thread on here. Good news is that everything is working and charging now, just wondering what I need to do about the goo. Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated!
If it's needed info, I don't have any extra fuel filtration, just the factory stuff. We occasionally run some additive through it- cetane boost, conditioner, etc.

You MIGHT have some sludge in the tank. It would be a pretty good idea to drop the tank and check to see if you have anything floating around in there!

Thanks Ditty. I have been thinking of doing the "in tank" mod, I reckon now's a good time for it!
