Rough idle, low power, etc

Hello there. This is my first diesel truck (yea.. i'm a n00b) and I am having some problems diagnosing an issue with this truck.

I have a '97 F-250 and recently replaced all the glow plugs, glow plug relay and changed the oil. I was hoping this would stop the rough idle issue but it has not. I have not yet tried cleaning out the fuel/water separator or changing the fuel filter because while changing the oil I noticed a very small leak in the fuel tank.

So, calling all pros... Do you think the rough idle might be a lack of fuel pressure, fuel filter or fuel/water separator, or all of the above? I do plan to fix/replace the issues above, but I am coming up with a game plan as to which one I should fix first.

Thanks for your time,

Matt

It's an auto. The truck has been chipped and I read somewhere that some of the programmers had bad firmware. Just thought I would throw that in to keep things interesting.

So injectors huh? I know I stumbled across a how-to for testing them. They're expensive little buggers though, any alternative to replacement? Like maybe a good cleaning or rebuild?

Thanks,

Matt

if there bad just replace them ,need to get someone to run some diag , check injectors both electrically and run a cylinder contribution test to verify which one , and make sure of any other problems

Call Johnathan at Swamps and he can tell you if he can rebuild them or not...probably can and for half the price of new.

Thanks for the input guys! I'll have to find a local shop to diag and then I'll decide if I want to try a rebuild or just go for new.

Thanks again!

Matt

I guess I should be careful what I wish for. I really didn't want it to be injectors and from the sounds of the diag, I wish it was.

Supposedly the injectors are fine, but the injector "harness" (the wiring harness that plugs in to the valve cover) are bad. That's not such a big deal, but they also said the harness 'at the truck' was bad and all together it would be around $1700 to fix it. Pfft.. I paid that much for the truck, no way I am going to blow that on some wires. Anyways, I plan to poke around some junk yards and see if I can find at least the 'at the truck' harness for less $$. If all else fails, I'll do my best to rebuilt it myself (I'm an engineer, can't be that bad right? .

Any further suggestion on this little situation are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

Oh.. and my first batch of biodiesel came out today. I put it in my wifes passat instead of the truck, but I can't wait to try it in that big monster!
