strange cold start issue

ok guys, i have a strange cold start issue, not your normal "won't start" issue.

The gpr checks out ok, and the truck will start fine when it's cold (coldest it's been is about 15*) as long as i cycle the gp's maybe twice. it will start right up and idle smooth for about 5 seconds, then here's where it gets strange...after starting and idling smooth for 5 seconds or so, it will start to lope really bad and idle goes way down. if it's not extremely cold it will usually smooth back out after a few seconds and be fine. if it's colder than say 25* it will die, but it will start right back up and run smooth again. sometimes does it 2 or 3 times before it will stay running. i think the glow plugs are working ok because if i don't cycle them it will not even attempt to fire off. when it tries to die, if i give it a little go pedal it will keep running, but it runs rough for about 20 seconds before clearing up. when it runs rough like that it smokes white.

i was wondering if it might be the intake heater or feul bowl heater maybe? any ideas? i would think if the gp's are not working correctly that it wouldn't even start as easy as it does? am i wrong?

If your GPR is checking out OK, you might have 1 or more bad GPs. You shouldn't have to cycle the GPs twice. I'd start with testing your GPs. It just sounds like you're not getting your cylinders warmed up to temp by the GPs(also causing the white smoke)for your truck to run smooth before it reaches operating temp.
