There is a pedestal under the turbo called the ebpv. It has a valve in it that closes nearly shut when cold to help warm up the truck. This is 100% normal. I ordered a non ebp pedestal when I got my new turbo so i dont experience the lack of power, loss of mileage and "turbine" sound when it is cold and at idle. If you would like to make it stop, many guys just unplug the connector that runs into the pedestal. I have heard that it is hard on the turbo as it does something with the oiling (someone correct me if I am wrong) but if you would like to gut the assembly, maintain has a good video to watch to show how to do it. Make sure you use plenty of penetrating lube when taking that turbo off. I rounded off one of my bolts and had to sacrific a smaller socket to get it off and back on.

well if you need any help with the turbo or injectors i work at a diesel shop in ft lauderdale, fl and i rebuild the 7.3 turbo and test&flow 7.3L injectors all the time. if your turbo is sticking like you say it can have damaged fins and need a rebuild. see the turbine shaft (exhaust side) of the turbo is spooled by your exhaust gas. if the fins are broken of rubbed down it will create extra space around the fins and barely, if at all build boost. the compressor wheels needs the turbine side to spin in order to build boost on the compressor side. and like you were saying, it wont spool it under little exhuast pressure but when you give it more throttle it gives it more pressure and is enough to spin the wheel. if you need more info you can call us.

its not that cold its been a steady 15-40 around where i live.... i know that the guy above said something like it is completely normal for my truck to do this but im not convinced because 4-5 of my buddies have the same truck and none of them are having the same problems if anyone reads this thread and lives around cincinnati ohio i would really like some help on this. i could pay someone also just not wanting to spend a lot of money right now times are kinda tough.

This sounds like the symptoms my truck is having. I have a '99 F350 diesel. I have recently noticed this noise and slight loss of power only when hauling horses. Only when I am accelerating after stopping. 1-2 seconds then back to normal. If this is normal...fabulous...just dont want to ignore the signs of something worse. Took it to the mechanic today and it threw two codes. He erased them before I wrote them down, so this might not be exact phrases:
Computer Module KAM Malfunction Turbo Pessure Low He told me to take it to a diesel mechanic, which I will do the second I have the money, but I have to make a 8 hr round trip with the trailer Sat...can barely afford the diesel...hoping this truck wont break down on me. I have owned this truck since '01, never had this problem before...seemed more common yesterday when I hauled to San Antonio and back. Any ideas? Should I be worried? |
