99 Powerstoke smoking bad when you get on it...

I have a 99 powerstroke cargo van 159,000 miles that smokes like mad when you get on it or downshift (auto tranny). It's in Indianapolis and I'm afraid to drive it back to Canton Ohio. Here's my question,,,, Is it safe to drive like that, if not is there somewhere in Indianapolis I can get it fixed quickly and reasonably? Thanks for the space and your help. rick.tarr@sledbuilder.com

Check out Turbo & Diesel Injection Co. they're close to downtown Indy, but I can't remember what street.

The smoke is blue, I don't think it's white like steam from the cooling system or black from burning too much fuel. Let me know what you think - Rick

Sounds like turbo. Pull the intake and see how much play is in the shaft, in & out. Look for oil around the compressor wheel.

I took 99Smokin73Stroker advise and took it to Turbo & Diesel Injection Co. downtown Indy. They ruled the turbo out and said it was more than likley the injectors. The computer showed no faults or codes. They wanted $200 each for injectors plus under valve cover wiring harnesses, gaskets and labor about $3000 for all that.
They also said the glow plugs were bad, so I had them replaced, changed oil, filter and fuel filter for $500 to $600. I'm going drive it back to Canton next week and look around for a second opinion and hopefully a better injector price, if that's what's wrong. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for all the help so far - Rick

You may be able to find a better price on the injectors, but the downside is that PSD injectors really are not very cheap. 3 grand seems to about right from what i've seen with other people. Since it is a cargo van I doubt you're looking to upgrade the injectors, otherwise i'd say shop around for a set that you might be able to get for cheaper.
