Long crank but runs fine once it starts

I tried another forum, but got no responses. Maybe I can find a guru here Thanks in advance!!

I've spent a couple hours searching, but can't seem to find anything I can use. I appreciate your patience.

Here is what I am seeing:
My '99 F350 cranks for 5 -8 seconds before it starts. Once is starts it runs strong. Some, but not excessive smoke which goes away a couple seconds after it starts.

I've checked:
- Batteries - 12.7 - 12.8 Volts. About 10.7V cranking. Returns to ~13.5 V after GPR opens.
- GPR - works as it should
- Glow Plugs - one is bad, but the other 7 are fine plus it has been in the 60s when I have tried to start it.
- I've pulled fill screw on the HPOP. It is consistently within 1/4"of the top.
- I have to add only about a quart of oil during my 5000 mile oil change interval so I am not really losing any oil.
- No oil in ICP Connector
- I used my AE scan tool - no codes, but using the monitor function, I see the Injector Control Pressure at nearly 0 for most of the time it cranks, then as soon as the ICP starts up it starts and runs. From what I have found, this makes sense since the ICP needs to be around 500 psi to trigger the injectors.

Here is a print out from my AE Scan

I guess my basic question is: Why does the high pressure oil system fail to build pressure for about 5 seconds (see data above) then seem to work perfectly? Since the ICP% stays low this whole time, it appears the system isn't calling for pressure ????

Stuck IPR? - But, my behavior is very consistent. It is the same every time. I would think if it were sticky it would stick sometimes and not others. Plus, wouldn't the ICP% go up and not get the appropriate response?

Electrical? - Again, I would think it would either work, not work or be intermittent - not the same delay to build pressure every time.

Please give me your thoughts.

Unplug the ICP sensor and try again.

Also do an HPOP test. WOT run. Go somewhere that you can go from 60 to 80 and measure the ICP pressure and % like you did for the starting. That will show condition of the HPOP itself.

Your % at idle seems a bit higher than it should be. I hover around 10%

Here is what I see for a warm start of my 2001 van. A mechanic that looked at it said he thought it was a little slow starting. I get ICP as soon as it starts turning over:

Sorry the formatting is so bad

I've tried multiple ways to get it to look nicer, but it appears an attachment is the only way. Let me know if you would like me to do that.

Thanks,

Was there a resolution to this? I am having similar issues, did you replace the starter like willisville1?

My battery was good, my starter was fine. My truck had been sitting (in an heated shop) most of the winter with only an occasional start to move it out of the way. After a couple longer trips, the problem resolved itself. I think the HP oil system lost a little oil. After starting and running a few times it starts just as well as my other 99 Powerstroke. I do continue to have a problem that may or may not be related to the HPOP.

Thanks for the reply, it's nice when there's a happy ending to an older unresolved thread.
