Strange howling noise, Think the turbo is dieing?

I noticed a few days ago that my turbo is making a very loud howling sound under hard acceleration on my White truck. Its like 3 or 4 times louder than the normal hiss and has more of a howl or roar sound.
Still running about 25-28 psi boost and the EGT seems to be about the same as always but the sound it is making makes me think something is going to let go very soon.
Any suggestions as to what it could be?
Should I go ahead and order a good aftermarket turbo and if so any recommendation as to which one and who from?
I got the D66 on my purple e99 but as I understand it I have a lot more choices for my white 2000. Id like to stay in the $1,500 or less range and as for now I do not plan to change the injectors until they die.
This is of course assuming it is the turbo, I need to check it out this weekend.

If it is your turbo, and you like how the D66 performs on your E99, you cant go wrong with a 38R. Plenty of vendors carry them and most, if not all are well within your budget.

Finally had time to check it today and the shaft end play is around 3/8" and the wicked wheel looks like its chewing into the housing, so I'm fixin to order me a 38r turbo.

Didn't think a 38r would fit on the e99 trucks?

Correct. It won't unless you get the newer pedestal, up pipes, 3" intakes w/ boots, spider pipe.

Got the new turbo on Whitey, dang thing sounds like a fighter jet now! Turbo was $1349 on eBay, and I didnt have time to do it so I paid a local shop $280 to install it.
