Cold Start Surging
Got a problem since the temps have dropped. First off.. it is a 2001 F350, strait piped, DIY Tymar intake, Bully Dog Chip, with 130,000 miles, automatic trans.
Last year I had a rough time getting it started in the cold.. I replaced the GP Relay, and all 8 glow plugs. Changed to synthetic oil. Fixed it all up. This year, I start the engine after it sits for a day or to, or after a real cold night... it fires right up.. surges a couple of times, then shuts off. Cycle the key, and it fires right up again. Now its not the slow turnover/truck shaking roll like only 4 cylinders are firing.. it FIRES right up all 8.
Once started the second time, it will remain runnning but surge and surge. So I flip Bully Dog switch to High Idle.. it runs like it should, with a skip in the idle once and while. I give it a few minutes, switch back to drive it and put it in gear. It will then surge a few times and act like it wants to stall out. This will occur until engine temp comes up to normal oper. temps.. Then no problems. I can shut it down for an hour or so, start it up again like it never happened.
It is a really weird thing. It does not smoke, and seems as if my fuel mileage is best it has been.
Could this surging just be a cold start issue like I had last year, but with synthetic oil and the glow plug system working it just changed the characteristics of how the truck feels and sounds???
Could it be the ICP going??? What are the symptoms of that starting to **** the bed???
Need some help. Thanks - Matt
