more likely to be a turbo or intake problem. the black smoke means you are pumping in more fuel than you are burning. my boss has a 7.3 and had 8 bad injectors and never smoked a bit. how many miles are on it?

you need to get the codes read.

it sounds like either low fuel pressure, bad turbo, bad hpop
