Hard Starting - Always

We've got a 95 here. It has a hard starting problem. It's not an intermittent problem. It has problems starting hot or cold. We have checked the glow plug harness, solenoid, relays, and the actual glow plugs, they are all working correctly.

The truck will start and run fine if ethered.

What should I look for when trying to diagnose this problem?

sound like you have either a fuel problem or bad compression.no engine should have to have ether sprayed in it when it is warm to start

First don't use either. It's like crack to a diesel.

Either will explode when it comes in conact with your hot glowplugs if the intake valve is open your hand will be in the line of fire.

As for the the hard start, Have you checked all your vitals? Oil, Batteries, Fuel, Starter.

Battery voltage should never go below 10.5 Volts, or you will never get started.

Your starter needs to turn the engine fast enough. Should be about 650 RPM's to fire.

Is the oil in the HPOP at the full level? Pull the plug off. It should be 2" or less from the top.

Is there white smoke coming from the exhaust? Lack of smoke may mean no fuel, or low fuel pressure.

Basics have been checked by the mechanic. Battery, starter, fuel, oil has been checked and changed.

The oil in the pump is at the correct level.

No smoke coming from the exhaust at all. Which leads me to suspect it doesn't have adequate fuel pressure. How does one check the fuel pressure on this engine?

OK, No smoke means no fuel!

Which could be 2 things. Get a scanner and hook it up(it has to be a good scanner) You need to read the inputs from the various sensors while cranking.

If your HPOP isn't getting enough pressure, your injectors will not fire! Your Injection Controll Pressure has to be at 500 LBS or greater to fire the injectors.

Then check your fuel pressure. that could also be the cause but low fuel pressure will still get to the injectors and be fired if your HPOP is working.

Also, your timing is based of of the "CPS". this could cause both. Smoke and no smoke. For as cheap as they are now, it wouldn't hurt to change it. If your timing is off then the PCM and the IDM will not co-operate with each other. Resulting in No-Start.
