injector replacement -- why?

thank you for reading this and any help you may have.

i just got back from getting my truck repaired. the hard start problem was caused by 2 or 3 bad injectors. the dealer said it could be caused by not replacing my fuel filter. my filter has 11,000 miles on it -- has been in truck 18 months (haven't been driving it as much lately: unemployed and diesel price)

what can i do to prevent injector's breaking and needing to be replaced? or what could cause the injector's to fail?

dean

truck is 99 1/2 f250 sd -- has 71,000 miles.

dirty fuel could make it through the fuel filter and clog it up.
