What would cause my 01 7.3l to not respond to cold temps.
I was wondering if there is a temp sensor someplace to tell the computer what the outside temp or motor temp is so that it will turn on the glow plugs ,high idle and exhaust back pressure valve. My truck will not do any of the stuff it is supposed to when it is cold I know the gpr is good because I put in an override switch and can get the truck to start that way otherwise it won't start in the cold. It won't idle up even with the parking brake on and the ebpv never activates. Any ideas on what could be wrong and cost of the parts needed. Thanks for your input.

the engine oil temperature sender is the imput the PCM uses to activate those things.....might start there...

Were is that located and could the truck run fine with that sensor bad?

there is a picture of it on page 24 of that link.....its on the high pressure oil resevour. Should be a 0-5 volt reference signal depending on the temp. If it doenst change resistance through it with different oil temps its bad.... |

Marc, first of all thanks a bunch for your advice. I went out and unplugged the wires from the sensor and put my meter on the pins and there was 58K of resistance and then I tried to start the truck to let it warm up to see if the resistance changed. Well the truck ran like crap so I shut it off and plugged the wires back in figured I would have to let it run awhile then shut it off and check resistance that way but to my surprise while waiting for it to warm up it went into high idle. So I plugged my ebpv in and it works too now you touch the brake or accelerator it idles down and a minute later idles back up just like it should. Any ideas what would make it start working and do you think the glow plugs would work now too if they would I will put the wiring back to stock. Thanks again.
