Major problem this morn

Went to start my 02 and it cranked fast as usuall then sounded like the starter disengaged . It spins but wouldnt engage.
Looked at it and the aluminum starter plate that goes between the engine and trans at the starter mounting area just exploded .The starter bolts were tight . The whole thing just broke. So now I have to drop the trans and case to rplace it and the flex plate which got a little nicked up at the teeth.
Anyone had this happen to them?
I have to blame it on super cold temps over night . I cant think of any other reason . That plate is an inch thick and cast aluminum . It just let go.
Im pissed . $300.00 in parts and its a job to fix . I just came back from two weeks in Florida and the truck just ran perfect . Im glad it didnt do that on the trip back here to Indiana.
