Looking at 1st 7.3...knocking noise help

I test drove my first 7.3 today and loved the truck...
everything drives near perfect, except it has a "knock" in the motor.
I asked the owner about it and he said that it is a flat spot that has developed in a lifter, I've never heard of anything like this?
Anybody got some insights to what this may be

im a beginner when it comes to diesels myself, but from my knowledge and what i've read you will have to determine if its a mechanical "knock" from the lower end or top end of the motor, or its an injector not firing correctly.

any injector can potentially fire incorrectly or stick open etc...from what i know, the #8 is more common to have problems because it gets the least amount of fuel to it..

Sound like he's not sure? How many miles on it? Service records? Service personally or by a shop? If at least have him drive it to a shop to have it looked over?
