Running & Starting Problem on 97

Hello Everyone, I have just returned to Az. for the winter and am having a problem with my 97. Sometimes it will start chugging when I'm running down the road. I have to stop and turn the truck off & back on again and it will run OK. Sometimes it will not want to start and I have to re-try. Sometimes it will start up and sometimes it wont start & I have to re-try it again. It will eventually start up. I bought a CPS from Auto Zone last year. Will this problem register a code? The guy at Auto Zone said that it would not register a code unless the check engine light is lit. Any help willbe greatly appreciated. Thanks Don'97
