Another one......Wont Start
Hey Guys,
We have a 99 7.3L Flat Bed for our work truck. We picked up about a year ago and at that time went through the whole thing maintenance wise and got it all up to par and running good. It only has 132k miles on and we don't put more than 15-20k on it a year. Things have been a bit slow with the holiday so it probably hasn't been run in two weeks but at that time it did run great. Well went out today to get her warmed up for some deliveries I have today and she won't start. Keep in mind we are in Southern California and its about 50 degrees out this morning so I don't think its a cold issue. It trys to crank and the batteries are strong but it just doesn't seem like its getting fuel. It just chugs and chugs and chugs and never turns over. If I keep trying a few times then eventually some smoke comes out the exhaust and kind of stinks not like diesel exhaust. Anyone have any ideas? I have to get it running reasonably soon! Thanks, John |

check the codes.
when you turn the key on, do you hear the pump operating at the dr. side frame rail? |

Hello,
I don't have anything to check the codes and I'm not showing anything on the dash that might make me believe its throwing a code? The fuel pump is coming on I can hear it going everytime I turn the key. I tried priming it a few times just to see if I could shoot a little extra fuel in there or something? Thanks, John |

does the oil pressure gauge rise when you crank?
does the tach move AT ALL while cranking? considering that you have almost no smoke while cranking, i'd say fuel is not entering the cylinders. there are multiple possible causes try pulling the fuel filter cap. see if there's fuel in the bowl. sounds silly, but check the oil level. these things'll start on only like 5 quarts, but check anyways. beyond those preliminary checks, you will need a device capable of reading live data and pulling manufacturer specific codes. soft codes will be stored without illuminating the MIL |
