7.3 engine noise?

I have a 1999 f550 build date 7/15/1998 it started making a noise like a fan belt comming appart pulled over instantly and shut it off. Not the fan belt. Only about 1 mi. From home so I re started and began limping home then started knocking lightly and smoking a grayish smoke . Get in the driveway excessive blowby enough to lift the upside down filler cap but now light ticking went away. Going to do a compression test tomorrow am. Any ideas or suggestions?

Also I may be able to squire a 1996 psd for a good price will that engine work in my 99?
