WHERE IS THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR?

My battery light was on for a couple days, then it wouldn't start. Auto zone tested the batteries and they were bad; replaced both. Battery light was still on and now it won't start again. I have heard low batteries will fry the voltage regulator/alternator. I am planning to get the alternator tested and will replace it if bad. WHERE IS THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR? I've heard on some, it's built into the alternator? I have a 99 F350 SD DRW with a 7.3L turbo diesel. Single alternator.

Got er' fixed

Just wanted to thank everyone for their quick responses. I got a new alternator, recharged both new batteries that I had drained because of the bad alternator, and am up and running again. No battery light, no problems so far. Thanks a ton
