99 powerstroke gallops at idle when cold

Have you guys ever had yours gallop at idle from a cold start? It will gallop for a minute or 2 then it will smooth out after it is warm. IF you have it plugged in it will not gallop at idle (since its warm).

Any ideas?

Pickup is a 1999 with 260k on it.

Gallop as in jerk arounds when your driving it. OR are you talking about it romping? A cold diesel is gonna run poorly. Until they get up to temperature a.) the internals contract due to the cold and can cause a small loss of compression. B.) the combustion area is cold and hinders compression ignition. And c.) the oil is cold and has a higher viscosity which is more difficult to move which hinders injection because our injectors use oil pressure.

With the block heater in your are removing these variables. Mine has a pretty rough idle until it reaches operation temps.

Im still pretty new to the whole powerstroke game but it sounds like you can chalk it up to just having a cold engine.

I will agree with the majority of ur reply. The thing is we owned the pickup since new with 16miles on it. I have read could be the injector sleeves to the high pressure oil pump.
