TURBO? loss of power,vibrating,white smoke,HELP

On the the interstate yesterday 2000 7.3 runningfine then starts losing power and vibrating, rpm up power going down.Pulled into rest stop let truck cool down looked at hoses started out again and it ran better.Maybe 15 miles and it started doing it again stopped and cut it off,let sit for a while and and it ran better again but started acting up again.Started thinking maybe turbo acting up but worked after it cooled so put water on turbo to cool it and ran fine for a lot longer! did this 2 more times in roughly 60 miles and it worked and made it home!Could this be bad Turbo?Maybe turbo bearings going out?294,000 miles on it

Turbo is certainly a possibility. The intermittent part seems odd, but the failures are not always identical. Take the boot between the turbo and the air filter box off. Spin the turbo impeller. It should be smooth and free spool like spinning a jack on the concrete. Then hold the impeller shaft af the end and try to move it up/down, side to side. It should be quite time with nearly not perceivable side movement. If it spins and feels gritty, or wiggles side to side/up/down, you are going to need a new turbo, or possibly a rebuild if you want to go that way.

I have a spare garrett ball bearing turbo I might sell if you are interested. Otherwise, it sits in the shop as a spare.

Good luck
Peter
