Nice truck, Mileage not so much!!

Hey guys new to the forum. I have actually always had (and still do have) dodges. I was recently in NJ and went to a equipment auction with a buddy. They were auctioning a 99 f450 auto 4x4 with a 9' dump bed. The truck has 71k on it. It was a city or county truck from the looks of it. Anyway I couldn't help myself and a picked it up for $4k which I thought was pretty good. So I drove back home to Indiana and freaked out when I could only get 6 mpg at best. Needless to say it cost a fortune to get home. I have done a full service on it and of course checked the tire pressure which are 19.5's by the way but 6 is still the best I get. I know it's a heavy truck and it's got 4:10's in it but I thought I should at least see 10 on the highway. Any education you can give me would be appreciated.

get an 4" exhaust, if you can get it straight piped, if you have emissions make sure you get a high flow exhaust system, the cat and muffler stock are doing you no justice at the moment. do the 6637 intake mod, get the ebpv delete pedestal and remove that valve from the turbo and get a 6 pos. chip, you should see a change in your mileage, one other thing when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? that will help also. others will chime in but thats just a rough start.

My avatar is my goal for the 7.3

The fuel filter was changed as part of the service. No one else has any input. I'm not planning on modifying it because I won't use it enough to justify the expense. I just wanted to know if 6 mpg is what I should expect.

Something is obviously wrong. I get 12mpg all day towing my RV (total weight is over 15k).

Thats what I'm saying. But what is it? It's not throwing any codes and it has already had the exhaust opened up, it only has a flow thru muffler.
