so its an 01-7.3 with 218k on her. she just died while driving and got towed home. it definitely doesn't want to start but will, feels like shes running on 4 cylinders at best. real rough idle and wont rev at all. i have been reading a bit and wts light is normal and tack works. buddy tells me to remove valve covers and check harnesses and for oil coming out of injectors. i really don't know anything about diesels. she is normally a strong runner and starts right up every time no matter how cold it is outside. THANKS for you time. Aaron

my '96 7.3 started acting up like that...it was the ICP sensor. however, you can unplug it and see if it clears up to test it i believe. if not...the harness under the valve covers control the injectors and the glow plugs. good luck

If it was "running great" one min, and on 4cly the next I wouldn't think of injectors first. But you buddies suggestion of looking under the valve covers is a good one!
![]() A quick test for actually running on 4clys (you might be 100% correct here) is to get it started and feel the exhaust manifolds to see if one is cold. That would point to the electrical plugs located under the valve covers (UVCH) that go to the injectors. They are problematic on this engine, and can be a simple fix..... Try that first, see if one side is just dead... |

Just be careful when removing the bolt that secures the dip stick, they have been known to stick and twist up the dip-stick tube, ruining it. |
