Wont start after long drive, not heat related...

Hi, I have a Ford F350 7.3 Turbo Diesel. It’s been well maintained with the fuel filters and fuel pump as well as the gasket under the valve cover that supplies power to the fuel injectors having been replaced within the last year or so.

My problem is a bit frustrating. We use it as a service truck and we have one customer that is about an hour and a half away. We don’t visit them regularly but when we do, we always have a problem starting the truck for about 45 minutes after the drive.

I don’t think this is heat related as the truck runs strong beforehand as well as right after it starts. Also, we regularly use the truck for service locally so it basically runs strong all day, but in short trips of maybe 10 or 15 minutes.

I have unscrewed the gas cap, checked the fuel pressure and scanned the codes, kicked the living $hit out of the tires with no luck.

I'm not sure what else to do.

Yes, there is no noticeable difference in starting other than in one instance it will run and in the other it will just crank. After it starts, the truck runs strong...

I thought it was something called vapor lock but people who have that seem to report a loss of power while driving, we don't get that. We simply shut the truck off and then have to play a few hands of cribbage befor we can start the truck again.

I've experienced vapor log in gas rigs before, specifically carburetted engines, but with the pressures in both a gas fuel injection system and a diesel system, I'm not sure vapor lock is even possible in modern engines.

I don't know what year truck you have, but there's a TSB related to 2003 7.3L engines here: PowerStroke bulletins and parts

Look for 2003 F-Series and Excursion Long Crank When Hot and/or Code P1211
