7.3 has tapping sound at idle
I have a 2002 F250 7.3 that has a tapping sound which gets louder as the engine warms up. The mechanic unhooked injector 8 and it went away, so they first tried a new injector an the noise was still there. They then decided it was the piston. Well they replaced the piston and all and now the tapping is still there. I only notice it at idle but it is fairly loud. I just bought this truck recently so don't have a lot of experience with this. Any help would much appreciated.

Did you put fresh bearings in when the piston was replaced? Whenever you dig that far into a motor you should always replace the bearings and seals while it's apart. Now you're back to square one when it could have been fixed with a basic freshening up while it was out.

You do realize that #8 is always going to 'cackle' like that unless you do a regulated return and HPX, it gets less fuel than the others therefore the cackle.. and oh ya the hutch/harpoon tank mod will help too. i highly doubt there is anything wrong with your motor.
