Dually pulls like a toyota pickup!!
Hello all....Every since I bought my 01 f-350 dually I've been a fan of the 7.3 powerstroke. However a couple of weeks ago I experienced a problem that this truck should not have. I was pulling a 10,800 lb trailer up a 6% grade and the truck was struggling at 45-50 mph....I have a 5 inch turbo back exhaust, cold air intake and an EDGE evolution 5 stage programmer. My EGT's were dancing at about 1250 degrees F, and my boost would climb no higher than 6-8 psi. If I gave more throttle all that would happen is my EGT's would climb and my programmer began to de-fuel.....When I exited the highway and tried to take off from a stop I can hear this roar from under the hood ( sounds like a fan from hell ) that I don't ever hear unless I've been under load. Is this normal?? I would think this truck should pull that grade and weight with no problem. I've pulled the same trailer up the same grade with my companies 3/4 ton 06 dodge cummins with better results....please help?

whats the smoke situation. is it smoking like a freight train or nothing

I didn't really see any smoke in my mirrors.....I was only running it at level 2 which according to EDGE is for towing/hauling. My "uneducated" guess was that maybe it had to do with the 7.3's fuel deadhead issue or maybe a problem with my boost pressure relief....but hey what do I know

Do you normally see more boost than that? And I wonder if the roaring fan noise could be you ebv closing which might cause the low power? Im just kinda thinking out loud here.

I get that kind of boost just going down the highway, so I'm saying we have a turbo issue.

Unloaded normally if I romp on it from a stop my boost will climb all the way to 18 psi.....Truck seems fine when I'm driving unloaded around town or on the freeway. Loaded is when it seems to tuck tail like a new born puppy.....Here's some food for thought though.....With my programmer up in the higher levels (unloaded) and if I mash on it I have seen my boost levels rise up to close to 30 psi....but only once in a very rare while. Usually my boost tops out in the high teens. Is this normal for a programmer? And if so why not all the time? Why does the truck seem to vibrate/shudder from a stop? Shouldn't my cold air, and exhaust mods drop my EGT's? Did Oswald act alone in the assasination? Elevation is about 4000 ft FYI........

I would guess either boost leak or turbo going out. Either way sounds like a boost issue.

check all your ic boots and your uppipes, you got a boost leak(not shown until under a HARD load).

My fears are confirmed....as I removed my intake to begin installing my new HPX line I saw heavy amounts of soot on the driver side up pipe and on the fire wall.......Looks like its time to save up for some International bellowed up pipes.....was a pain in the a$$ this is gonna be.....by the way, the HPX line works great |
