CEL on while cranking goes off after 60 sec

When the truck is cold and I crank it up, the light comes on before it is actually running and stays on for a minute or two. Then suddenly the motor will blip up high for a moment and the light goes off and everything runs smooth. It only does this when cold, so I am suspecting a bad glow plug. does this sound right?

I have an OBD2 scan tool I've had for years (actron) but I doubt it will work with this truck since its a 95. Does anyone have any advice? I actually have a box of new glow plugs how hard is this to change?

Am I correct that an acton scanner wont read these codes? I might try it tonight to see what happens.
