Underhood Fire?

I was poking around under the hood of my 2000 when I noticed something unusual. On the passenger side of the engine bay there is a round canister that is part of the AC system with two hard lines running into it. It has(Had in my case) a black foam insulator around it. My foam insulation is melted off of it on the inside and there was a wire leaning up against it whish is not melted as well. This wire has a 90degree elbow on it. I will at least tape the wire up and I will try to snap some photos. Any idea what this may be? My guess is that maybe my AC refrigerant was/is low and overheated? Any ideas? Thanks
