Turbo Stutter
I have a 99.5 F-250 6 speed manual. I recently did some changes to it and now I'm getting a trubo stutter under a load on a grade while towing in 5th gear. It's not only limited to 5th it starts as the rpms fall to around 2200 rpm to 1900 rpm and won't build boost to come out of the stutter unless downshifting putting rpms in the 2500-2800 range. When I do the down shift I get a huge waste gate blow off and the issue goes away till the rpms fall to that range again. So far I've only had the issue while towing my trailer which is about 7000 lbs. no issues while running lite. I recently added a banks ram air intake, mbrp 4" turbo back exhaust and a hypertech max energy tuner. My question is this, is this the waste gate actuator not holding the gate shut letting it try to open causing the stutter, or do i need to upgrade my compressor wheel? Has anyone else had this issue?
Any help is appreciated! |

From what I understand, the waste gate blow off during downshifting is why the waste gate exists. You are removing the load from the engine and your engine and accompanying turbo will want to run away unless that pressure is vented.
What does your turbo stutter sound like? Do you have a boost gauge or EGT gauge? If so, what are the readings? |
