using coolant?

Hey so it seems my 7.3 is using about 1/4 inch of coolant out of the degas bottle every couple of months. I have no evidence of water in the oil nor any white smoke out of the exhaust. It runs well, I get 16 mpg ave mpg.
Where should I start? compression test? Anyone do one yourself? Anyone experience coolant loss that wasn't from an obious leak?

Boy, I thought I could be anal....

You're saying that you'd need to add like an inch every Year? Gee,,, I don't think I'd lose any sleep over that!

You might just try leaving it low. My truck will slowly drop to about an inch below the low mark if I fill it, but won't get any lower than that.

I know its not much, but it IS going somewhere and coolant doesn't just evaporate. I have a 1.9 liter VW TDI and I have never even opened the coolant degas bottle because it doesn't ever move. On my Mustang I noticed the same thing where I was loosing a touch of coolant over time and it ended up being a head gasket. Ill just keep monitoring, see what happens....I hope it hits a spot where it just doesn't go any further down.

Glad to see its really hard to find anyone who has had a blown head gasket in one of these trucks. I'm still interested in hearing about anyone doing their own compression test. Anyone know where to get a reasonable priced compression tester or know how much the stealership would charge?
Thanks for the replies.
