motor refresh kit

I took my motor out to repair oil pan leak. When I removed my oil pan I found two large pieces of metal in the oil pan. I will try to describe what they are. They look like hooks, after looking at the bottom of the motor I noticed that each cylinder has one of these "hooks" bolted in it. There are two cylinders where these parts have broken of and where laying in the oil pan. What are these called and what do they do? Since I have the motor out is there a refresh kit that comes with rings and gaskets? If I remove the heads can I reuse the head bolts or do I need new ones? First diesel rebuild.

Sounds like the oil jets that spray oil on the bottoms of the pistons. I think they are called the piston cooling jets.
