motor troubles

hey guys new here, I joined to get a good understanding of the 7.3s. my dad has a 02 7.3 and it seems to be a little awkward to other 7.3s. His seems to have plenty of power BUT when going up an incline of any decent size the truck seems to be bogging a lot. I have to get on the petal a lot(like 60-70%) to get it to down shift and start picking up speed again. also it seems that it only makes any kind of power when it starts to get into higher boost. Do i need to check to see if there are any leaky couplers or what? I need some advise on what to look for. Also what seems funny is that it will only get around 17mpg, and if you get on the highway it gets 15-14mpg? is this normal?

is there anything done to the truck like performance wise? 15 mpg is not uncommon, but i would expect that a stock truck could do better. 7.3's do not make boost easily so sometimes when going up hills you really have to hit it hard to get the boost up to even above 10 psi to get it to go. cruising at 75 my truck only is pushing like 2-4 psi. are you throwing any codes? if you don't know i would find out, it might help you figure out a few other problems.

nothing done performance wise. It does have the 3.73s in the rear so i figured it would have better fuel economy. No codes have been thrown so??

BTW what can i do to it to get more out of it besides the normal: tuner, exhaust, and CAI?

sky is the limit really, just about anything you do to it will increase the performance of it. apart from lifting it... new injectors, turbo, nitrous, but the exhaust and intake are usually good things to start with to get the most out of future modifications
