00 leaking tons of fuel out sensor

My Sisters 00 7.3 broke down the other night. I went down & saw fuel spraying out from her water in fuel sensor. It was dark so I just replace the o-rings & slapped it back together. Still leaked. The next day I could see that the sensor was all melted.

I know that the wire that powers the fuel heater in the filter housing runs through this sensor, but what I can't figure out is WHAT caused this sensor to melt like that?

Thanks guys.
Also, is there any way to go w/o this stupid sensor? Ford wants $140.00 for it.

Thanks, BGJ

If it is part F81Z9J294BA you are looking at, Tousley has it for 96 bucks. To go without it, you would have to rig a seal for the hole is goes in. Being in Colorado, you might want your fuel heater occasionally.

Thanks, 10 4 about wanting the heater. I searched that part #. That is the heater itself. It was leaking throught the faulty sensor.I was hoping for a way to delete the water in fuel sensor & still run the wire to the heater.
Thanks a lot Bro!!
