Puff of smoke and died
'97 Powerstroke; Changed fuel filter, drove it 10 miles. then I drained fuel bowl because I had forgot. Drove it 3 miles, truck shuttered and a puff of white smoke came out of exhaust and engine died. Can't get it to start. Gas on rag only works 'til fumes are gone. Any ideas what the heck it is? This is my first stroke. Fuses all look good and bowl is 3/4 full of fuel.

Sounds like you air in the system. I not familiar with 7.3 when you say fuel bowl are you talking about the water separator along the frame?

I'm a rookie, I call the place the filter screws in a bowl. It's on top of motor, and has lever where you can drain it. I was also told that you need to sok filter in diesel before putting it in. True?

I don't think you have to soak it.Here what to do take the lid of the top of where the filter goes and fill it up with fuel put the cap back on and start it up. It should pick the fuel up.
