fuel line gssket placement

I am working on a 95 powerstroke that had a leak on the line going to the left head. After finally finding the gasket it turned ouy to be a rubber tube about 5/16 in long. My question is does this go between the line and the fitting as it does not appear to be big enough to fit over the line and to big to go into the fitting in the head
