Turbo Shaft Play??
I have another post about possibly cooking my turbo. Anyhow, I went out this morning and took off the intake tube, and got to the impeller, and I have about 1/4 to 3/8s of shaft play (I can pull the impeller about 1/4 the way out when wiggling on it) I think this is very bad, and probably is causing my problem. Blowing blue smoke with black smoke when I get on it, and a big puff of blue smoke when I let off the gas. Does this sound right?? Seems like time for a rebuild or new turbo. Just want your guys opinion. Thanks

You probably answered your own question. I skimmed through the other thread you made, but if your shaft has that much play in it.. that could be one good reason why your seeing that smoke. I'm no Tech though.
122 thousand miles isn't that much on the factory turbo for it to go? Wonder why it could've crapped out on you? 1000 degrees (Pre-Turbo reading?) isn't really enough to do any damage? You just have the 10K mod too? |

Well I was at 1000 EGT for a LONG time going up throught the mountains. And I also have a programmer (Diable Sport Predator) also a wicked wheel and 4 in exhaust and DIY intake. I changed the wheel about 2 months ago, and had hardly any shaft play in the turbo, so I think that is what it is, just wanted some other input, before I shelled out that much cash and effort. Thanks

when i burnt my turbo out it had around a half inch of pull in and out and i could move the impeller up and down about a quarter inch each way... and my truck was smokin at idle like u wouldnt believe. when i took the turbo off and took the thing apart i found that on the impeller there was a chipped tooth and on the exhaust impeller the back of it, the end towards the center of the turbo, was gouged down and worn around the center of the wheel where the wheel was wearin on the turbo center section.... but i know wat caused this, around 40 psi on a stock OBS turbo with no ball bearings at all in just a thrust washer. im now movin on up to a holset H2E kit and it should be in around the middle of next week
