help with oil leak?

Hey all,

I thought I patched my massive oil leak. It is coming out of the dipstick flange on the oil pan!!!!! I have cleaned it, put rtv around it, jb weld, you name it, I have done it. Still it is leaking a bunch of oil.

I do not have the time to pull the engine to fix this. I have tried to unscrew the flange and that was a no go also. I tried this for the international kit.

I have been fighting this leak for a week + and am about done fooling with it.

Oil dipstick Flange Leak

I had the same problem with my 99 powerstroke, I was able to unscrew the big flange nut off of the oil pan, clean it all very good, and then I put a generous amount of RTV silicone around it and put the nut back on good and tight. I then let it sit for 24hrs. That was last January; I use my truck pulling hard at least 3 to 4 days a week and have not had a problem since. The main thing is getting it very clean and letting it sit to make sure the silicone is very very dry. I tried it a couple times without it being super clean and not letting it sit before I finally got it fixed right.

Oil Leak

Chris, I cannot remember what I used to remove the nut. I do remember it was not that easy. I am thinking that I used a large pair of channel locks. Lemme know how it goes, good luck. Jared

could not get nut off... broke a tool, lost my mind.... and stoped for a while, then tried some more rtv. I injected some under the nut, and then covered the rest of the area up with rtv. (the starter is off for more room)

could a valve cover leak about 4 qts in 20 miles? I need to degrease the engine again and tripe check the hpop lines, turbo parts.......

is there any other oil lines in this engine that could leak?

Thanks Chris

Plumbers epoxy may work for you, comes in a stick at Home Depot and the like. You cut off a hunk, kneed it till its all one color, and slap it to a very clean surface. Use starting fluid or brake cleaner to be sure all the oil is gone and don’t touch with oily fingers. I did a structural repair inside a T-case with it where the chain front output bearing support broke it 3 years ago. To my amazement it is still holding and I have hammered on it a bunch, I think it’s now stronger than when it was new.

I have heard of a plug or something in the back of the valve cover leaking that is very hard to find so you may want to look around up there also.

update... RTV failed again..... so I cleaned it all off and got a "metal bonding agent" let it set up, and it leaked! but in a differt spot this time, so I will clean that area and reapply the stuff..... it does not leak as much, but over time I could blow up the engine.... so I will try again.... I did look at the plumbers stick stuff.... that is the next step I think, or just bite the bullet and put a new oil pan on......

have you checked your dipstick tube o-ring? I chased my oil leak around the flange for a while before i realized half of my leak was from the dipstick tube itself.

oil leak

Yes, My old tube was rusty and came out in 3 pieces, so I have a new tube, new oring, and a bunch of rtv for a extra seal. at first that is what I tought, so I was going to replace the seal, but the tube just could not get out, and started to break on me.
